Shared Dreams: A Mother-Daughter Journey Through Nursing School

Mothers are often a crucial part of a nursing students support network. They serve as cheerleaders and coaches throughout the process. But mother-daughter duo Marcia C. and Emilee C. took it one step further: going to nursing school together. They pursued their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees and graduated in 2024.

Healthcare Roots

Marcia grew up surrounded by healthcare professionals. Her father was a doctor, and her stepmother was a nurse. It seemed inevitable that she would follow in their footsteps. However, her life took an alternate route when she welcomed her first child, Emilee, at only 19 years of age.

Marcias healthcare career was put on hold while she prioritized her family. It wasnt until Emilee was a little older that Marcia pursued a career as an ultrasound technician. While it wasn’t her initial dream of becoming a nurse, it allowed her to remain within the healthcare field. After having two more children, Marcia became a stay-at-home mom. Nursing began to seem an increasingly distant opportunity. That is, until her daughter Emilee began her college education.

Rediscovering Nursing

While in school, Emilee encouraged Marcia to join her in a phlebotomy class. It turned out to be the spark Marcia needed to reignite her passion for nursing. She described getting a strong sense of fulfillment from the class.

“As I studied and researched human anatomy, I realized my deep love for this field. I wanted to pursue what I’ve always aspired to do, Marcia said. 

Emilee, too, found clarity through the experience. “After finishing the class, I realized that nursing was my calling. Nursing allowed me to genuinely express myself through compassion, hands-on care, and taking care of others,” she said.

Following the class, Emilee encouraged her mother to pursue nursing alongside her, knowing it had always been Marcia’s dream. Marcia quickly caught up with the necessary coursework, and their shared journey at 返字心頭 began. 

A Mom-Believable Learning Experience!

Attending nursing school together presented a learning curve for both Marcia and Emilee. Being mother and daughter and now classmates had its challenges and rewards.

“We’re so similar that we had to learn how to work together,” explained Marcia.

Emilee, who jokingly calls her mom, “the brain,” faced struggles as she adjusted to the demands of student life, but she eventually found her rhythm. “Nursing school was a major adjustment for me, she said. I had to learn discipline and accountability and discover my optimal learning approach.”

As they progressed through the curriculum together, they found their groove and regular mother-daughter study sessions became cherished moments of quality time. From the start, Marcia and Emilee pledged to support each other a commitment that sustained them through tough times.

“Nursing school is hard. People don’t realize the resilience and strength it demands to persevere. Having a support system someone who truly understands is important,” said Emilee.

When thinking back on her decision to pursue nursing, Marcia says her primary motivation was her children, including Emilee. Returning to school at 43, she was determined to demonstrate that there is always time to pursue one’s dreams.

“Success requires hard work and dedication, she said. If I can do it, so can you. I wanted to be their role model.

The experience of nursing school deepened the bond between Emilee and Marcia.

“It’s not that it brought us closer because we were already close, Marcia said. But it forged a different kind of connection enduring something so challenging and overcoming it together. We witnessed each other’s triumphs and struggles.”

Marcia confessed that experiencing this journey with her daughter was emotionally taxing. “As a mom, it was tough, she said. I was doing this for myself, but as a parent, you always take pride in your children’s accomplishments. I wasn’t going to leave her behind. We were in this together.”

Whats Next?

Today, Emilee, driven by a passion for acute/critical care, is a surgical nurse in the Intermediate Critical Unit (IMCU) at a local hospital. She aspires to become a flight nurse and attain her Family Nurse Practitioner certification. Meanwhile, Marcia currently works as in a local emergency department and shares Emilee’s ambition of earning her Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) certification.

Michelle S. (BSN 17, DNP 21, PMHNP 24)

Michelle S. (BSN 17, DNP 21, PMHNP 24) first heard the calling to help others when she was only 6 years old. She witnessed a hit-and-run incident involving her 3-year-old brother, a harrowing experience that instilled in her an awareness of the importance of emergency care, as well as a deep respect for the wonderful individuals dedicating their lives to the profession. The experience was the first step to igniting a deep-seated desire within her to aid those in need.

However, her journey into nursing wasnt always a straight path. Michelle, whose creative talents shone brightly from a young age, initially earned a scholarship to pursue design. Nevertheless, when the time came to choose a career, her aunt encouraged her to join the nursing field, and Michelle embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly.

When it comes to choosing nursing over design, Michelle says she knows she made the right choice: People often wonder if I regret my choice, but Ive always been drawn to healthcare, she said. Witnessing the esteem of the profession and considering my role as a young mother, plus the assurance of job stability, Ive never looked back. Its been an honor and one of the best decisions Ive made in my life.

After years of service as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) in acute care case management, Michelle decided to take the next step in her nursing career. She pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at 返字心頭-Ontario, earning her degree in 2017 and becoming a registered nurse in an oncology/stroke unit. During her time at WCU, her academic performance earned her a spot on the prestigious deans list, a testament to the efforts she put into excelling in her courses and clinical practices. 

Since graduating, Michelle has taken on roles that allow her impact to extend even beyond her patients. In her career so far, Michelle has:

  • Become a concurrent review nurse and was recognized as her departments first employee of the month
  • Pioneered the first onsite hospital nursing role for the utilization management department in her managed healthcare organization
  • Mentored and trained fellow nurses in their new onsite nursing roles
  • Initiated a voluntary mindfulness program for nursing staff, which was linked to boosted productivity and reduced stress
  • Developed a local resource guide to help minimize gaps in access to healthcare for female veterans at a local university

Through her different roles, Michelles efforts have had a ripple effect through the community. She has not just taken care of her patients, but championed projects and practices that empower her fellow nurses to provide better care.

Im not your typical bedside nurse, and thats the beauty of nursing its versatility, Michelle said.

Now, Michelle validates nursing practices within the Integrated Transitional Care department, primarily focusing on quality assurance and optimizing patient care. Though initially apprehensive about this new role, she now considers it one of her favorites, blending her case management background with clinical insights.

Recently, she decided to take on another important role, this time as a clinical instructor, serving as an internal preceptor for colleagues who wish to pursue their graduate degree. She took special pride in witnessing her first Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student graduate last year.

As to whats next, Michelle is on the verge of becoming a triple WCU alumna, on track to finish her post-masters Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certificate in 2024. I never imagined myself in mental health, but after completing my Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2019, I sought a specialty a niche, she said.

The mental health specialty is perfectly in line with Michelles experience and interest in wellness and mindfulness. About her career so far, she has said, I find fulfillment in roles prioritizing self-care, personal growth, teamwork collaboration, and fostering a positive culture. Most importantly, encouraging innovation to achieve quality and safe patient outcomes.

extraordinary ways. With determination and resilience, these women and countless others
embody the spirit of progress and excellence in healthcare.

What follows are some WCU blog highlights from the past year that showcase the profound
impact that students and alumnae have on todays healthcare landscape.

Empowering Public Health: A Journey from Alumna to Course Director and Non-profit Founder

Roberta S., MPH 20 joined WCU as a clinical and lab instructor for biochemistry in 2016.
Inspired by her teaching experience, Roberta decided to pursue further education and enrolled
in the online Masters in Public Health program at WCU. The programs community health
component had a profound impact on Roberta, providing her with a new perspective on global
health issues.

This newfound awareness motivated her to make a difference beyond the classroom. In addition
to her role as course director for biochemistry and nutrition at WCU, Roberta is the founder of
United Tooth Fairies, a non-profit organization that provides oral health care services to girls
aged 4-15 in Guatemala.

Alumnas Story of Success Spans From Courtrooms to Hospitals, Venezuela to the United States

In a journey across continents and careers, 返字心頭-Miami alumna Stella M., BSN
23, shared her inspiring story transitioning from a legal background to nursing. Despite having a
law degree, Stella found herself starting over when she had to leave her home country of
Venezuela for political reasons. She came to the United States and adapted as best as she
could.

Seizing the opportunity to fulfill her childhood dream, Stella enrolled in WCUs nursing program
in April 2022. Despite English not being her first language, her sheer determination and
commitment led her to pass the NCLEX just 11 days after completing her program.

返字心頭 Alum Discovers Purpose in Wound Care

Jesseca A. said she never expected to work exclusively in wound care after graduating in 2015
with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from WCU-Texas. Today, she is the vice president of
nursing at Wound Evolution, a private wound care provider with nine locations across Texas.

Jesseca found her passion in wound care after caring for an elderly patient with dementia.
When the patient first arrived at the practice, she was suffering from eight wounds across her
body. She had limited mobility after a previous stroke. The patients daughter was overwhelmed
by her mothers care and didnt know what to do before finding Wound Evolution.

Over the following weeks, Jesseca and her team worked with the patient to heal her wounds,
while supporting the daughter and family. When you help educate the family and empower
them on how to care for their loved ones, it helps alleviate some of the anxiety they have.

Jesseca joined Wound Evolution as a clinic nurse when it opened in 2018. As the company
expanded, Jesseca worked her way up to manager, nurse supervisor, and now vice president of
nursing. I developed the training program for all our new hires and then began managing our
Dallas clinic, she said. We started out with two clinics in Dallas and Fort Worth and then grew
to nine.

WCU-CGS MPA Student Aims to Bridge Gaps in LGBTQ+ Healthcare

While volunteering at an LGBTQ+ camp, Brenna M. had an experience that permanently
reshaped her approach to healthcare. She was looking for volunteer work to add to her masters
applications when she came across Brave Trails, a national non-profit organization dedicated to
LGBTQ+ youth leadership.

My time volunteering in the LGBTQ+ community was a turning point, Brenna said. It changed
my views on how I could use my expertise and career to advocate for those who might not have
the same privileges I do.

Providing care to LGBTQ+ youth ignited Brennas unwavering passion and now steers her
educational path as a master of physician assistant student at 返字心頭-Center for
Graduate Studies.

Like Mother, Like Daughter, Like Granddaughter: Family Spans Three Generations in Medicine

Sadafs goal, she said, is to always bring a positive change to her community, just like her own
mother who was also a doctor did.

My mom was a doctor, but she wanted me to do something more, Sadaf said. As a physician
in Pakistan, I was trying to bring change to one person at a time, but I thought with a degree in
public health, I could help the community at large.

After her family relocated to the United States, Sadaf began working at a local hospital as a
medical assistant. Wanting to expand her reach and impact on the community, Sadaf saw that
by creating and implementing new health policies and processes, she could have a larger
influence on her community.

After receiving her master of public health from WCU in 2019, Sadaf is now an investigator for
Riverside County. And inspired by her mother once again, Javeria pursued her long-term goal of
working for an underserved community and continuing her education.

WCU Instructor Uses OT to Nurture Roots of Wellness Therapy Garden

For 返字心頭 alumni and instructor Lauren Diaz, a large portion of the fieldwork
she does with students is to show the need for occupational therapists in the community.

At the very crux of what occupational therapy is, we focus on improving the health and wellness
of individuals through the engagement of meaningful occupations, Lauren said. We focus on
helping people thrive in their environment.

Laurens journey began by working at a womens transitional living facility that was starting a
therapy garden. She said that the experience led to the development of her role as a
community-based fieldwork instructor.

Lauren is currently partnering with two community organizations that assist people who are
experiencing or have experienced homelessness. Students work with clients individually and put
together a program to run group therapy.
